V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

Installation

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the V-bars are facing out.

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed by moving the hook to the next link.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

AJ: What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be checking out these Titan Chain tire chains that are a V-Bar style, so these are going to be great for lots of snow, thick ice. These V-bars are probably the most aggressive chains you can get. They're going to rip and tear right through that ice and help you get that traction that otherwise you'd be struggling with without them.Taking a closer look, you can see the ladder pattern design of these chains, which means it's just the lines that come across your tire, so that's going to be really good to help you start and stop. And then this is why they're called V-bars is this part right here. You've got these V-bars.

That's what I'm talking about, how aggressive they are. They're pretty much spikes that just crunch right through that ice, grip and rip it while you go. If you're somewhere there is light snow, a little bit of ice, you only use your chains twice a year, these probably aren't the chains for you, unless you live in places where it gets extreme amount of snow. These are pretty aggressive, and these are for heavy duty use.The chains are made out of a low carbon steel, so they're going to hold up to the snow and ice and even that road salt. It's not going to bother them at all.

Also have a speed rating of 30 miles an hour, which if you're in that deep of snow and that much ice, you probably shouldn't be going that fast anyway. They come in a quantity of two, so if you're looking to put one on each tire, you're going to get two of these, two sets, and they come in this canvas bag, which I'm going to be honest with you, it doesn't hold up very long. You saw the V-bars and how aggressive I said they were They're going to rip right through this bag. So I suggest getting a plastic tub or something and throw them in there. That way they stay contained and you can store them in the back of your vehicle and they're not sprawled up taking a bunch of room.So we've gone over how aggressive they are and how great they are for that snow and ice, but how hard is it to put on there Now, I suggest trying to do it in your garage. Don't do it right there in the snow.

But they're not that bad. Let's check out how I did it. First thing we want to do is lay our chains out here on the floor and just take a look at them. Make sure there's no breaks in the links or any twists or tangles or anything. That way when you go to lay them on your tire, you're not going to have any of those kinds of issues.

It looks fine the way it is. I don't think we have any issues. Now, these are V-bar, so a tip is laying them out with the V-bars facing up because you don't want them going into your tire. The V-bar is supposed to go into the snow and ice. So, with them in the right position, I'm going to go ahead and grab it by the center and drape it over the tire. Get them on there nice and adjusted, then we can go around back and make a connection.Around back, we're going to take the hook and go into our open link here. It's going to go on the first one. Leave it like this and go back out front. So we're going to take our lever and run it through our open link. Get all the way down there to the bottom so you can bend it back and you're going to see it tightening. You'll feel it too, as you do it, and then hook this up to our open link. That's going to hold it in place. Now you got the chains on there, nice and tight. Want to adjust them at any point you feel like it's not sitting right, but it looks pretty good right here. Now, if the chains aren't tight enough to the tire, you see there's a little bit of wiggle room in here when I move my hands, you're going to get a rubber adjuster sold separately and you can put this on. It's going to pull it more towards the center of the tire. You can see how tight this is, and now the chains don't move as easily.Once you've got it installed, I suggest go ahead and going forward and backwards in your vehicle, jumping out and seeing, make sure they are still on the tire, still centered, nothing's moved on you. But otherwise I don't think it's going anywhere. I think it's fine. You're good to go. Well, thanks for hanging out, and I hope this helps.

Some Deadly tire chains!! I highly recommend these bad boys to anyone who enjoys driving in the snow!

by:

Chain fit well for this application. A bit disappointed it took 15 days for them to arrive.

I had high hopes for my purchase since there was great reviews. Unfortunately that was not my experience. First issue, only part of order showed up when delivered. Reached out to etrailer to investigate. A few days later they shipped out the other set of chains I ordered. That issue was resolved. Second issue, I knew I would need to trim back the extra links on my chains, I was shocked as to how much I needed to cut off. It included a section of the ladder chain. Which ultimately wasn’t really an issue, I just think it should be clear this is a cut to fit tire chain, not a trim. I double checked the website, the canvas bag, and my tires, this was an appropriate set for those tires. Ultimately I’m very satisfied with the product. Not satisfied with seller/delivery.

I bought a pair of twist link (TC3235) for my front tires and V-Bars (TC3835) for my rear tires, so writing a combined review. The V-Bars have more traction but my front end doesn't have as much clearance so I opted for the twist links in the front.  I've now used these offroad 4 times, and once briefly onroad during a major ice storm that left all of our roads with skating rink type ice.
First - both chains fit 37" x 12.5 R18 tires perfectly.  This is despite the fitment not being listed on etrailer.com and the etrailer CS rep telling me they wouldn't fit.  The Titan catalogue / website does list 37x12.5R18.
Second - two pair of chains *just* fit in a milwaukee packout "Compact Tool Box" (model No: 48-22-8422).  There isn't a wasted inch of space.  After using them, I dry them in my garage, then douse them in WD-40 before putting them back in the packout.  These chains are made from an alloy that prioritizes strength over corrosion resistance, so surface rust appears pretty quickly on them.  Be warned that lifting all four chains together is heavy.
Third - They give amazing offroad traction.  The only way you're getting stuck is by getting high-centered.  You will not run out of traction if you have weight on your tires.  However, it is easy to get high centered when using these in the snow if you aren't careful.  Don't spin your tires, or your axles and frame rails will be holding the vehicle while your wheels hang in the air.
Fourth - I would only recommend using these onroad in very limited circumstances. During an ice storm I had to get a neighbor to the hospital. We live on an extremely steep hill and the roads had 1" of clear ice on them.  With the chains it was like the ice wasn't there.  But the whole truck vibrated a lot.  And it probably prematurely wore the chains.  If I drove faster than ~15-20 mph it really rattled the truck.  (offroad in the snow I'll drive 40+ mph no problem with these.  but driving on hard surfaces causes a lot of vibration).

The item went out of stock after I ordered it. However, customer service was very quick to source it and shipped it out very quickly. The level of attention by their whole team was excellent. I was receiving followup emails letting me know of the status of the order all the way up to even after shipment delivery.

by:

Quick and easy. One of my chain tensioner's broke and they had new ind out to me asap. I’ve always had a good experience with these folks.

by:

These are first rate quality HD tire chains. They're a good fit on my tires. As suggested, I practiced putting them on for first time in dry weather. From watching video instructions, I was able to attach and adjust chains w/out issue. I tightened them with three 15 " rubber bungees. Haven't had to use them yet.

by:

Great affordable product for my truck. Buying was easy, delivery was quick and the chains worked well.

by:

Received it 2 days back and it broke on its very first use within 10 mins of driving. Not sure if this is a design defect or poor quality of material. I tried following instructions very closely so doubt if anything was wrong in the way it was mounted. There was ample clearance in wheel well and it seems the chain just could not take stress.

by:

The chains work as expected. Got me out of the mud twice (2wd pickup). Don't spin and dig holes before applying or you won't be able to stretch the chain around the sunken in tire. I needed to jack it up once to get the chains on then they worked like a charm. I have not used in snow or on road.

by:

Never owned tire chain so I'm not an expert but they are easy to install. Note I did this in my dry driveway. I hope I never need to uses them but if I do I think they will work fine. Thanks etrailer for the awesome service you provided.

by:

All items arrived in good condition in five days on Colorado mountain area, and were easy to install. The products all appear to be of good quality and should perform as expected when used. for 2017 Ram 2500, no enough clearance on rear tires, but no problem on Front tires clearance. Recommend the V-bar links and chain tighteners used on off-road snow and ice, 4 wheels drive, front ties for 2017 Ram 2500

Great chains when you need the traction!

by:

I’m impressed. These tire chains are the real deal. I looked at various options online, Amazon, etc. I found etrailer. First, the web page is packed with info, tutorials, etc. once I ordered there was continuous communication. I downgraded from a 4x4 to a 4x2, and drive up to Buffalo, NY, from coastal Carolina. These chains are impressive and will provide traction and ease of mind going through the snow belt areas along Lake Erie and parts of the blue ridge mountains. I’ve hit heavy snow on this trip and wished I had a good tire chain. This resolved it. Installing is a breeze be sure to get the tire chain adjusters with them! Excellent service!

by:

A link was already rusted when received. Question the quality standards if it is already rusting and made it to the customer.

by:

Excellent chains. Used them extensively this last November getting up and down a snowed over road and snow/iced over rocky trail up the mountain in CO. They didn’t break on the rocks and got great traction on ice, got me out of several miles of 3ft of snow with ice underneath. I highly recommend the steel spring chain tensions. When properly installed you can get these chains nice and tight. I can only run chains on my rear tires due to upper control arm clearance issues (‘08 Tacoma) so I’m giving my second pair to my brother (‘12 f150) for his rear tires.

by:

Chains worked great on my 2014 1500 chevy. Used on a late season elk hunt. Easy to take on and off by myself. Had a bunch of refreeze on top of deep snow, and these kept my tires on the trail and not sliding off the mountain.

by:

Have not open the box yet will try them with in the week

by:

I bought these because they claim to be durable enough to be used off-road. The first time I used them off-road (albeit a very difficult trail), they broke and proceeded to rip my emergency brake line off of my rear driver side before I had noticed they broke. Not exactly the best experience I've had with chains.

by:

I am impressed with the Titan Snow Tire Chains I purchased recently. They appear to be well made and sturdy. They fit my tires and were easy to install. The V-Bar links allow me to drive into the woods with the confidence that I will be able to return home safely.

  • Are There On/Off Road Tire Chains Which Fit Both 275/65-18 and 245/70-17 Tires?
According to Titan Chain the Chains # TC2828 will not fit both your tire sizes. While they will fit on the 275/65R18 tires they are not the correct size for the 245/70R17. The difference could lead to damage on your wheels. You would want the Chains # TC3810 for the 245/70R17 tires. I was not able to find any chains which will fit both your size tires so you are going to be best to get a set for each truck along with Tensioners # TCMA2 so you can just keep them in the truck at all times.
